Coimbatore: Bakrid was celebrated with joy and enthusiasm in the city, with Muslims offering special prayers and distributing food to the needy on Monday.
Mass prayers were held at many places in the city. The prayers began in mosques at Ramnagar, Gandhipuram, Rathinapuri, Flowermarket, Karumbukadai, Athupalam, Singanallur, Kavundampalayam and other areas at 7am and went on for almost an hour.
In some places, separate arrangements were made for women to offer prayers.After the customary prayers and religious discourses, wishes were exchanged with embraces.
“The festival reminds us about the importance of compassion and humility. Sharing food and praying together builds empathy among the faithful,” said a resident.
The residents thronged Valankulam lake, Ukkadam Periyakulam lake, Race Course and other leisure spots in the city with their family members in the evening, while youngsters went out on long bike rides.
In Tirupur, Bakrid prayers were organized at 28 places by Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaath. Muslims offered special prayers in the mosques at Managalam, Palladam, Dharapuram, Udumalpet and Avinashi. Guest workers also participated in the special prayers.
