Udhagamandalam: The tourism department conducted boat races at the Ooty lake as part of the summer festival on Friday.
An official said, “Tourists eagerly participated in the boat races with over 50 people taking part in the contests.” Over 10 two-seated pedal boats were used for the races in six different categories including men-doubles, women-doubles, couples, and hand rowing.An exclusive boat race was also conducted for those with the local media.
Kannan, a tourist from Chennai said, “It is an exciting experience to visit the boat house when the boat races are held. It is nice to witness tourists participate in the boat races.”
Nilgiris collector M Aruna inaugurated the boat race events which were held in addition to the cultural programmes organised by the tourism department as part of the ongoing summer festival. The collector later distributed prizes to the winners in each category.
A tourism department official said the summer festival is being held at the boat house for three days until Sunday.
