Coimbatore: The Kuniyamuthur police on Monday arrested three people in connection with cheating a businessman of nearly ₹4 crore. Police have seized ₹20 lakh from them.
A police officer identified the arrested trio as V Pon Muruganandam, 56, of Arumuganeri in Thoothukudi district; Balaji, 35, of Kalakkad in Tirunelveli district; and S Rajanarayanan, 48, of Old Chettikulam in Tirunelveli district.
He said the trio were accomplices of Ferozhkhan, 43, of Kuniyamuthur, who along with others duped M Sirajudin, 44, of Wayanad in Kerala, of ₹3.92 crore in the name of iridium business.
According to the officer, Sirajudin has been running a construction company in Qatar since 2008. “Nissar, of Kannur in Kerala, befriended Sirajudin and introduced him to Ferozhkhan and Ashrafkhan, of Kerala, who he said were in possession of iridium. Nissar persuaded him to invest in the iridium business, promising 100 percent profit.”
Sirajudin paid ₹1.50 crore in cash to Ferozhkhan and Ashrafkhan on August 29, 2013. Later, Ferozhkhan and his accomplices received another ₹2.42 crore from Sirajudin till June 3, 2024, in several instalments. When Sirajudin approached for profit, Ferozhkhan, along with notorious rowdy Rocket Raja, threatened him with dire consequences, he said.
Sirajudin approached the Kuniyamuthur police, who registered a case under sections 406, 420 and 506 (ii) of the Indian Penal Code. Police issued a summons to Ferozhkhan to appear before them last week, but in vain.
“We checked his call details and came to know that he often spoke with Pon Muruganandam over phone. We arrested Pon Muruganandam and two of his aides at near Ulundurpet. We have formed two special teams to nab Ferozhkhan, his wife Saliyabeevi and his friend Ashrafkhan,” the officer said.
