Thiruvananthapuram: After passing the bills for the delimitation of the local body wards by making a mockery of the assembly procedures, govt has constituted a delimitation commission for the process.
The commission is headed by state election commissioner A Shajahan. The five-member commission also includes secretary (IT and environment) Rathan U Kelkar, secretary (PWD and tourism) K Biju, secretary (information and public relations) S Harikishore and secretary (labour and transport) K Vasuki.The powers for the delimitation of the boundaries of the panchayats and municipalities of the state is with the delimitation commission, to be constituted as per the section 10 of the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act, 1994. Once the delimitation is completed, the remaining formalities, including electoral roll revision, etc. will begin.
The govt had on the first day of the ongoing assembly session passed the bills for adding one ward each in all the local bodies. The bills were passed by waiving all the procedures in the assembly, without any discussion. The opposition had registered strong protest against the way bills were passed, and had even approached the governor requesting him not to give assent to the bills so that those do not become acts.
