Thiruvananthapuram: A man who intervened to resolve a quarrel at Vattiyoorkavu lost his left ear as two men involved in the tussle sliced it off using a machete.
The ear was rejoined later through surgery at the medical college hospital on Thursday evening. Rahul Raj, 31, of Laksham Veedu near Kavumpuram at Vilappil also sustained a fracture on his fingers in the attack.
Vattiyoorkavu police arrested Vivek, 37, of Puthuval Puthan Veedu at Mannamoola near Peroorkada over the incident and he was remanded after being produced before a court on charges under sections of IPC 308 for attempting to commit culpable homicide, 324 for voluntarily causing hurt using a weapon, 294-b for abusing and 341 for wrongful restraint.
Police said Rahul had reached the accused Vivek’s house after hearing some commotion there. The victim and the accused Vivek are acquaintances.
Inside the house Vivek and his friend Shabu were engaged in an argument with two other men over a loan amount, and Rahul tried to resolve the conflict. However, Vivek who was not pleased by it attacked Rahul using a machete.
According to police, Shabu restrained Rahul from behind and Vivek chopped off his ear using the machete. Later Rahul was hit on the head using the machete and his fingers were fractured when he blocked the attack by his hand.
Shabu is absconding after the incident and police have intensified search for him. Meanwhile, the accused Vivek also filed a complaint against Rahul and two others for trespassing into his house and attacking him.
