COIMBATORE: Selvapuram police in Coimbatore arrested a woman and a man for cheating a used two-wheeler dealer. The woman cheated the dealer after dressing up like a head constable.
The arrested duo have been identified as Ambika, 37, wife of Rajamanickam of Angalamman Kovil Street at Perur and her friend M Ragu, 37, of AD Colony at Perur Chettipalayam.Ragu is a goods autorickshaw driver.
They cheated D Dinesh, 34, of Perur Main Road who is engaged in used two-wheeler business.
On December 12, 2023, Ambika, who dressed up like a woman cop, and Ragu went to Dinesh’s shop. She introduced herself as a head constable attached to the VH Road police station.
Ambika told Dinesh that she wanted to buy a used scooter on EMI. He agreed to give a used scooter worth Rs 20,000 and asked her to pay an EMI (equated monthly installment) of Rs 1,300. She gave photocopies of her Aadhaar card and ‘police identity card’ as proof.
Ambika paid the EMI for the first three months. After three months, she stopped paying the EMI.
On June 10, 2024, Dinesh contacted her over the phone and asked her to pay the pending EMI. Ambika threatened him with dire consequences for asking her to pay the EMI.
Dinesh visited the VH Road police station where he inquired about the woman cop. He came to know that no such woman cop was working at the police station.
On Wednesday, Dinesh lodged a complaint with Selvapuram investigation wing police inspector Rajeswari who registered a case against Ambika and Ragu under sections 170, 171, 420, 468, 471, 506 (i) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested them.
“She liked the khaki uniform and police service. She bought clothes and stitched the police uniform. She forged a police identity card. We seized the identity card and the uniform, shoes and gap from her,” said inspector Rajeswari.
They were remanded in judicial custody.
