German ambassador Philipp Ackermann loves mangoes. His #MangoDiaries last year was all about finding the best mangoes across the country and learning more about the fruit. “Knowing about mangoes is like science,” he told us at his residence where he recently hosted a mango high tea.

‘WE DON’T KNOW MUCH ABOUT MANGOES IN EUROPE’

Talking about his love for mangoes, the German ambassador shared, “I have a long history with Indian mangoes that goes back to 2007 when I was exposed to mangoes in a household with a mango-tasting culture. After this mango tasting, I was surprised by the stories and the fruit. Through the years, I have understood that the more you get to know about it, you realise you don’t know enough. And it is a fruit which we don’t know much about in Europe. Whenever you talk about mangoes in India, people have stories to share. That was the thing about my #MangoDiaries last year. I went to official meetings, to see people and if you asked them about their favourite mango, then they would share a whole story. I learnt a lot about mangoes – people told me how they put it in a bucket of water because it is a hot fruit and some people told me that they used to steal mangoes from under their grandmother’s bed – so basically everyone has a relationship with mangoes.”

MANGO STORIES

Ravinder Singh, educator, mango expert, storyteller, and lawyer shared stories about mangoes with guests. He said that his love for mangoes started because of his grandmother. “I was raised by her, and she would talk about this one memory where she and her friends would climb a mango tree in their childhood.” When a guest asked for a tip to purchase a good mango, Ravinder, who spent four to five hours buying these mangoes for the high tea, shared, “Press the tip of a mango. If it is ripe enough, you will know.”

“Ghalib said mangoes need to have two qualities, they need to be sweet and there needs to be plenty. So, today, we will make sure that you don’t go empty stomach,” shared Ravinder.
