Coimbatore: The Kovilpalayam police on Tuesday arrested the younger brother of Gokul, who was murdered near the district combined court complex here last year, and five members of his gang for conducting kangaroo court to settle issues between two groups of college students in their jurisdiction.
An investigation officer identified the arrested people as G Pradeep, 21, Gokul’s brother from Lakshmi Garden at Kondayampalayam; J German Rakesh, 24, of Varathaiyangarpalayam; S Santhosh, 25, of Bannariamman Nagar at Kappikadai; R Deepak, 21, of Kovilpatti in Thoothukudi district; G Rahul, 18, of Anna Nagar at Gudalur in the Nilgiris; and a 17-year-old boy from Kappikadai area.
He said Deepak had planned to attack G Vetrivel, 19, a second-year engineering student of a private college at Kovilpalayam, and eight of his collegemates at their rental house in the same locality on the night of June 22.
“Deepak was roped in by his collegemate Praveen, a student of a private college of technology at Kovilpalayam, after Vetrivel and friends snatched his mobile phone a few days ago. Vetrivel and the gang invited Deepak for a talk, which failed. Subsequently, Deepak and eight of his friends went to the rental house of Vetrivel and gang on June 22 with sickles and knives and made away with Vetrivel’s motorcycle,” the officer said.
Vetrivel lodged a complaint a case against Deepak and his friends under sections 294(b), 395 and 506(2) of the Indian Penal Code on Sunday night.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that the students had been locking horns with each other for the past one year. “Pradeep and his gang conducted a kangaroo court and supported Deepak. They were arrested on Monday and remanded in judicial custody,” the officer said.
