The situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China is stable but there is a need to keep a very close watch on it, Army Chief General Manoj Pande said on Friday amid the nearly three-year-long border row in eastern Ladakh.

In an interactive session at the India Today Conclave, Gen Pande said the Indian Army has a robust deployment of troops all along the LAC besides having adequate reserves to deal with any contingencies.

“Overall, I would say that the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is stable but we need to keep a very close watch on the situation as it develops,” he said.

“As far as the deployment of forces by the adversary is concerned, there has been no significant reduction in the deployment. There is a great focus on modernization of forces, especially those deployed opposite the LAC,” Gen Pande said.

He said both sides are engaged in talks to resolve the remaining issues in eastern Ladakh.

“Till the time a resolution happens, our deployment of forces, our alertness level will continue to remain of a very high level,” General Pande said.

He said the infrastructure development on the ‘other side is coming about at a very hectic pace, be it the road infrastructure in terms of the highways which run along the LAC, be it the upgrading of airfields and heliports’.

Gen Pande said these are some major developments which need to be taken note of specially in the context of the adversary’s ability to mobilise troops.

“As far as what we are doing, I think we have a robust deployment all along the LAC and all three sectors. I must mention that we have adequate reserves to deal with any contingencies,” he said.

“With the infusion of new technology and new weapon systems, our capability development is an ongoing endeavour. Equally we are focussing on infrastructure development, especially forward area roads, and helipads etc,” he said.

He said the Indian Army’s preparedness levels are high.

“From the winter months, now we are transiting into the summer months and we have undertaken minor changes as you would do as summer posture,” Gen Pande added.

Asked about the lessons learnt from the Russia-Ukraine war, he said land-centric warfare will remain a decisive domain, especially in India’s case where it has contested land borders.

The notion of victory will remain land centric in our context, he said.

On the Agnipath recruitment scheme, the Army Chief said it is a win-win policy not just for the military but for the society and country at large.

Calling Agnipath a transformational reform, Gen Pande acknowledged that getting the implementation right is key. Issues like training the recruits in a short frame of time is critical.

“The initial feedback that I get from the regimental sectors, the youth that have come up are very enthusiastic and energetic. So I think that’s a very good sign,” he said.

The Aussie wicketkeeper batter made some changes to her playing XI from their last match against Delhi Capitals which they lost by 5 wickets.

“Always nice to win the toss. Going to bowl tonight. Wicket looks a belter, don’t think it’ll change much. Hope dew comes in later. Last few teams batting first have lost the game. Few changes from the last match. Grace Harris comes back in, can’t remember all the others. Unfortunately Shabnim misses out,” said Healy after toss.

Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan on Friday said creating great talent may not be enough if the State does not get other variables right because labour is fungible. He pointed out that this was evident during the COVID-19 lockdown when a large number of Tamil youth, who were working in Information Technology companies in Bengaluru, applied for travel passes.

Speaking at the technology, entrepreneurship and skills summit, Umagine Chennai 2023, at Chennai Trade Centre, Mr. Rajan said technology was going to be a key driver of growth and that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and his Cabinet were vested in providing the right platform.

“Human capital matters a lot. But there are large areas…countries…. sometimes federations such as the European Union where labour is fungible. So even if you create great talent, you may find that it goes to some other place,” he said.

Mr. Rajan said Bengaluru and Hyderabad had better ecosystems when compared to Chennai despite the fact that Tamil Nadu was the pioneer in setting up Tidel Park and IT department in government administration much before other States saw the potential.

“I must admit we are not the leaders. Cities such as Bengaluru and Hyderabad seem to have better ecosystems that attract talent and our ecosystem has not been that good. So this is our time. Our time is now to use this transition, this new S-curve formation in things like FinTech, IoT applications to large scale, government or governance problems, and reclaim our spot, not just in Chennai, but across the State… because it is our talent. We want to become the best ecosystem for innovation, for technology and for providing the right kind of career and opportunities for wealth creation for our youth,” the Minister added.

India would like to see action, more than just assurance, the ministry of external affairs said on the vandalism of Indian missions in various countries by Khalistanis, adding that he hoped that foreign governments will act against and prosecute those involved.

Addressing the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, to a question on the vandalism of the Indian high commission in London and the Indian high consulate in San Fransisco, said, “On the issues of security, whenever we feel there is an issue relating to the security of our missions abroad high commissions and embassies, this issue is taken up.”

“Whenever we have concerns where we feel that there will be some activities that may harm our interests, we do take it up,” the MEA said.

“You would have seen specifically in London and at least in San Francisco, we’ve strongly taken up the matter of vandalism and attacks on our missions there. You would have also seen our statements in this regard,” he added.

Bagchi further stated that India expects the host governments to take action to identify and prosecute all those involved and also take necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

He also hoped that the government would provide full and adequate protection to Indian missions as well as to the personnel working there.

“I think that’s probably what your question was, assurance… Yes. Look, on that element we just say look, I think we are not interested in just assurances. I think we would like to see action. That’s why I would leave it at that,” the MEA spokesperson added.

Earlier, on March 19, a pro-Khalistan protestor in London climbed the High Commission of India’s balcony and pulled down the national flag.

A video of the same incident had gone viral on social video. In the now-viral video, the Khalistani protestor is seen on the balcony attempting to bring down the Indian flag. At the end of the video, another man is seen reaching the balcony and wresting the Tricolour back from the Khalistan supporter.

Khalistan supporters also allegedly attacked Indian Consulate in San Francisco (SFO). Videos of supporters breaking the doors and barging into the office surfaced on social media.

Though visuals of the vandalism at the San Francisco consulate have been doing the rounds of social media, the incident is yet to be confirmed by Indian officials.

While the visuals confirmed that the incident happened at the consulate, the date could not be ascertained.

Visuals shared online show a sizeable mob brandishing Khalistan flags and mounted on wooden poles, using them to smash glass doors and windows of the consulate building. Raising pro-Khalistan slogans, they broke through makeshift security barriers raised by the city police and installed two Khalistani flags inside the premises. (ANI)
