Thiruvananthapuram: Two women labourers were killed after they were struck by lightning at Punalur in Kollam district on Tuesday. The deceased have been identified as Sarojam, 42, wife of Chandrababu and Rajani, 54, wife of Mohanan Pillai. They were MGNREGA labourers hailing from Edakkunnam. Two other women labourers were also injured, and they are under treatment in the hospital.
The incident took place around 11.30am at Maniyar where the women were working at different places on a rubber plantation belonging to a local resident.As there was light rainfall and thunderstorms in the morning, they had sought shelter under a tree. Soon, lightning struck them while they were there. There were six labourers working on the plantation. As their work in the municipality ended, they decided to work on the property of a private person. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that there will be rain, thunder, and lightning in various districts of the state.

Though they were taken to the Punalur taluk hospital, their lives could not be saved. The bodies have been shifted to the morgue and will be handed over to relatives after the postmortem examination.
They were the labourers of the Punalur municipality.
