Coimbatore: The Sulur police arrested a moneylender on Wednesday night for collecting exorbitant interest from a 36-year-old woman for the past 15 months and pushing her to the brink of committing suicide.
Police said Regina, 36, a single mother from Pallapalayam near Sulur, had borrowed 2.5 lakh from K Vijayakumar, 38, of Ondipudur, at a 5% monthly interest in March 2023 for constructing a house.“She has been paying 12,500 to Vijayakumar for the past 14 months. When she defaulted on the payment in May, Vijayakumar threatened to send goondas to her house to collect the interest along with the capital amount. He also didn’t pay heed to her request to give her more time to pay the interest,” a police officer said.
Upset, Regina, a mother of two children, left for Chennai, along with her son, with an intention to end her life. However, the Chennai police rescued her and handed her over to Sulur police. Based on her complaint, Sulur police registered a case against Vijayakumar under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Act and Section 506 (I) of Indian Penal Code. He was arrested and remanded in judicial custody.TNN
