Coimbatore: A 56-year-old man was arrested on Monday for murdering his brother-in-law over a land dispute at P&T Colony in Kavundampalayam in the city on Sunday.
The accused has been identified as S Shanmugam, 56, of Kavundampalayam.
Police said Shanmugam owned 3.5 cents of land at Karamadai in Coimbatore district. His wife Sumithra had handed over the property documents to her younger brother M Srinivasan, 42, of Kavundampalayam, a decade ago, to fund his business.Srinivasan had mortgaged the property and opened a textile shop in the city. However, he faced huge loss in the business and was unable to remit the property documents.
Meanwhile, Shanmugam often fought with his brother-in-law for failing to get back the mortgaged property documents. On Sunday, when they were involved in a similar argument, Shanmugam stabbed Srinivasan in his chest with a knife and fled. Srinivasan died on the spot.
Kavundampalayam police registered a case under sections 294 (b) (uttering obscene language) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Shanmugam was arrested on Monday and remanded in judicial custody. He was lodged at the Coimbatore central prison.
