Coimbatore/Salem/Madurai: Blaming the DMK govt for the hooch tragedy, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday demanded that chief minister M K Stalin resign for failing to prevent sale of illicit liquor.
Leading a protest by AIADMK workers at Kallakurichi on Monday, EPS also wanted a CBI inquiry into the case and alleged that several ruling party functionaries were behind the illicit liquor trade in Tamil Nadu.
The AIADMK’s Kallakurichi MLA had complained to the district SP about illicit liquor and also sought a discussion in the assembly, but the govt neither allowed a discussion nor took steps to stop the trade.
“If govt had taken action, the lives of poor men and women who died consuming illicit liquor could have been saved,” he said.
Former ministers D Jayakumar, Sellur K Raju and S P Velumani headed the protests in Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore.
In Salem, a scuffle broke out after police objected to AIADMK workers putting up a stage.
Party leaders had requested permission to use a truck as a stage, but it was denied.
Police said they had only granted permission for the protest and not for putting up a stage or to tie banners.
