Thiruvananthapuram: Thumba police probing the passport fraud have found on Friday that as many as 25 people with criminal backgrounds, received passports using forged documents and they went abroad using them.
According to police, the people behind all the cases registered so far are the same, and one more case has been registered by Thumba police on Friday against six men, including a police officer.With the new case, the total number of cases registered by Thumba police in the fraud rose to nine. Poonthura police have also registered a case in the fraud. Thumba police will also register 15 more cases in the coming days based on the findings of the investigations.
There are a total nine accused in the cases registered. The new case was registered against Sajad Ali, 32, of Attipra, Manoj ML, 50, of Radio Park at Attipra, Kamalesh Krishna, 39, of Vilavoorkal, Sunil Kumar, 60, of Chaluvali near Varkala, Prasanth, 40, of Pallinada and civil police officer Anzil A, 37, of Konchira.
Sajad Ali managed to obtain a passport using a fake voter identity card and the police officer gave no objection certificate for issuing the passport after receiving a bribe of Rs 5,000 from him.
Three among them, Kamalesh, Prasanth and Sunil Kumar, and Kollam natives Badarudeen, 65, Sarafulla Khan, 54, and Edward, 62, of Maruthoor are already in custody.
“The fraud has been going on unchecked for years and it came to light only recently when an officer cross checked the address in an identity proof, which was presented by an applicant. The address was found to be fake and the role of the civil police officer in the fraud was also found out when the accused were interrogated. Following it, we started examining all the recent passport applications and the documents presented. During examinations we have found that 25 people obtained passports through fraudulent ways. We will register individual cases over all passport applications,” said police.
They also said that the number of cases will definitely go up in the coming days as a team has been examining all the passport applications which were approved by the police officer accused in the case.
