Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD, featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas, and Deepika Padukone, is breaking records in both India and North America. According to Times of India, Telugu is the 11th most spoken language in the United States with a population of 1.23 million.
Kalki just got done with the first extended weekend with premiere shows taking place on 26th June.Including Wednesday premieres, the film till Saturday, had minted about US $ 9.1 million and till Sunday evening, it added another US $ 1.6 million. Sunday numbers are expected to jump more by the time night shows are completed, but at this point, the total collection of the film now stand at US $ 10.7 million, thus beating SS Rajamouli’s Prabhas and Rana Daggubati starrer Baabubali 2- The Conclusion, as the highest weekend grossing Indian film in North America.
Back in 2017, Baahubali 2 was the first film to cross the US $ 10 million mark for an Indian film in the North American circuit , the film held on to the record for nearly 7 years.
Kalki has also gone on the become the 8th highest grossing Indian film in the United States of America by beating the likes of Aamir Khan’s PK ( US $ 10.61 million) and Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani ( US $ 10.6 million). It is quite possible for the film to cross Dangal and Padmaavat’s numbers by tomorrow, making it the 5th film on the list. The film is expected to carry forward its weekend momentum into following week, as Monday is a holiday in Canada and Thursday is a holiday in the USA.
