COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has fined ride-hailing app Rapido for overcharging a customer on a short ride in an auto.
According to an official source, D Nithyanandan of West Ramalingam Road in RS Puram here booked an auto on October 10, 2023 through the Rapido app to travel to Coimbatore railway station from AKS Nagar on Thadagam Main Road.The app displayed fixed charges of Rs 103, which he paid after completing the ride.
Upon receiving the invoice via email, Nithyanandan noticed that the charge for the 2.91km ride was Rs 89.22 and booking fees and convenience charge amounted to Rs 13.78, bringing the total to Rs 103.
As per a notification issued by Tamil Nadu govt, the charges for an auto ride are Rs 25 for the first 1.80 km, with an additional Rs 12 per km thereafter. Night service charges from 11pm to 5am are 50% extra on the total fare.
Nithyanandan had travelled 2.91 km, and according to the state government’s notification, the charges should have been Rs 60, including night fare charges. However, he was charged Rs 89 by Rapido.
Subsequently, Nithyanandan filed a petition with the Coimbatore District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
In an order, commission president R Thangavel and members P Marimuthu and G Suguna stated that the invoice issued by Rapido revealed that Nithyanandan had paid Rs 89.22. It was proven that the ride-hailing app had collected an excess amount of Rs 29 from him, thus adopting unfair trade practices.
The commission directed Rapido to refund Rs 29, the excess amount collected from Nithyanandan. Additionally, it ordered Rapido to pay Rs 5,000 as compensation for mental agony and Rs 5,000 towards the cost of the proceedings.
