Coimbatore: An unidentified person axed a sandalwood tree near the hostel for the students of Government Arts College at Race Course here in the early hours of Monday. The Race Course police have registered a case and formed a special team to nab the sandalwood smuggler.
Police said the sandalwood tree was located on the corporation land. “Corporation officials lodged a complaint with us the same evening.The land is located close to the residence of the district collector and the officers’ quarters of the Indian Army at Race Course. The area is under the surveillance of CCTV cameras. Our special team is collecting CCTV footage from the locality to trace the identity of the sandalwood smuggler.”
Following the incident, the city police have intensified patrolling at Race Course and surrounding areas at night hours and early morning hours. TNN
