COIMBATORE: The Allikulam Tank Protection Organization has opposed the town panchayat’s plan to connect sewage water pipes to the Allikulam tank in Annur in the district.
Spread across 46 acres, this tank is crucial for groundwater recharge in the surrounding areas of Annur. S Gopal, a volunteer from Kousika Neerkarangal, said that natural waterways for this tank have been encroached upon, causing rainwater to flood some residential areas in Annur.
Town panchayat officials are planning to connect sewage pipes to the tank to reduce flooding in Palani Krishna Avenue, located in ward no.5 of Annur town panchayat.
“The local body should identify and desilt the waterways to avoid flooding. Connecting sewage pipes from residential areas to the tank is not acceptable. The tank is part of the Athikadavu-Avinashi project. If sewage water mixes with the tank, it will become contaminated,” Gopal said.
Loganathan, a volunteer with the Allikulam Tank Protection Organization, said, “Recently, we strengthened the bunds around the tank and desilted it through crowdfunding, with support from private companies and volunteers. We spent around Rs 30 lakh on desilting to increase the tank’s capacity to store more water. After recent rains, the tank is filled to 15-20% of its capacity.”
“The inlets and feeder channels of the tank are being desilted. Once the tank is filled, it will improve the groundwater level within an 8 km radius. We have submitted a petition to the Annur tahsildar to stop implementing the plan to connect sewage pipelines to the lake,” he added.
An official from the revenue department said, “We just inspected the tank area to draw a plan to avoid flooding in Palani Krishna Avenue. So far, we do not have any plan to link sewage water pipes with the Allikulam tank.”
