Thiruvananthapuram: State govt has submitted a proposal to Centre for a new flood mitigation project in the capital city, seeking funds for a comprehensive initiative. Kerala Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) sent the proposal on May 31, with state govt anticipating funding approval this month. The proposal, which integrates input from various departments, including local self-government (LSG) and irrigation, primarily aims to clear clogged sections of canals and streams in the city to facilitate smooth water flow into Parvathy Puthanar Canal.
An official close to district administration explained, “We have identified flood-prone areas and found that many canals are clogged. Immediate cleaning is necessary. The total project cost is Rs 200 crore, with Rs 150 crore expected from Centre and Rs 50 crore from state,” the official added.
This new initiative, although bearing a different name, shares same objectives as the previous Operation Anantha, according to sources close to district administration. If approved, Centre will allocate necessary funds to city corporation, enabling the project to commence. The plan includes a detailed outline of various groups and divisions involved, and a designated official will lead project’s efforts. In past years, attempts to revive Operation Anantha failed due to delays in implementation. District administration faced severe criticism from govt for delay in flood mitigation activities.
Key components of the revived initiative include desilting and deepening drains, ensuring all major and minor drains are cleared of silt and debris to enhance water flow and reduce blockages. The project also involves expanding stormwater drainage network by constructing new stormwater drains in flood-prone areas and connecting them to main drainage system to facilitate efficient water dispersal. The comprehensive plan aims to mitigate flooding risks by addressing root causes of water stagnation and blockages in city’s drainage system.
