Coimbatore: Four men were arrested on Thursday for selling online lottery tickets through WhatsApp groups.
The Thudiyalur police said Vinod Kumar, 39, Pradeep, 34, (both residents of GN Mills), Aadish Kannan, 28, of Nallampalayam, and Satish Kumar, 39, of Velamina, were nabbed based on a tip that they were into the sales of banned Kerala lottery tickets in their jurisdiction.
“We conducted a vehicle check near Pattatharasi Amman Temple at Vellakinar and found the banned lottery tickets in a car, in which the four were travelling. They confessed that they were into the sale of three-digit online lottery tickets at various locations in Coimbatore, earning lakhs of rupees daily,” an investigation officer said.
Police have seized five laptops, nine mobile phones and ₹1.61 lakh from them. Pointing out that Dobar Zafar alias Prabhu, 42, of Thudiyalur, was the gang leader, police said they had launched a manhunt for him.
“All the five are facing various cases. They have created 92 WhatsApp groups to sell the three-digit online lottery, which is priced at ₹60. After receiving the online payment, the arrested four would take ₹15 as commission and give the rest to Prabhu, who would then pay the prize money to the winners in cash. They have been selling lotteries worth ₹10 lakh daily. We have frozen Prabhu’s bank account with ₹18 lakh,” the officer said.
The arrested four were produced before a judicial magistrate, who remanded them in judicial custody.
